Outstanding In The Field – Cape Cod Visit – August 20th and 21st Tickets on sale Now!!

Friday, March 20th, 2009

Happy first day of spring, not only are the birds chirping loudly today,  it is also the day that  Outstanding in the Field puts their farm to table tickets on sale. They sell out fast, so if you have an inclination to join the culinary adventure on Cape Cod, get your tickets now. Outstanding In The Field is an interesting twist – instead of bringing the food to the people, they actually bring the people to the food.  They travel in a vintage red and white bus and set up farm dinners across North America, I have been a HUGE fan of Jim Denevan, founder of this “restaurant without walls”. Such a fan in fact, that I was sending them email since last October, inviting (hounding) them to add Cape Cod to the tour. Guess what – they are coming!!

Donna Eaton from Cedar Spring Herb Farm agreed to host two nights of incredible meals in the field. Thursday night, August 20th chef Liam Luttrell-Rowland (formally of The Juice and Enzo) will be creating the feast and on Friday the 21st chef Doug Ramler, of Cape Cod Sea Grille is at the helm. Both nights will feature local Cape Cod foods from the sea and land, a 5 course, farm-style, dinner. Each course will be paired with a artisan wines. Cost per person is $200, for this culinary experience at the source. To get tickets go to Outstanding in the Field registration, they accept pay pal for payment.

Dining at the source, in some cases, the food has been harvested within inches of your seat at the table. After a tour of the farm, our celebrated chef will cook our meal as we all settle in: farmers, producers, culinary artisans, and diners sharing our food at a long linen-cloth table, set in the field. Together we explore the connection between the earth and the food on our plate, for an unforgettable experience.

Check out the web site, the photography is amazing, and you can see where the team is heading in their bus. Also, Jim has recently published a book: Outstanding in the Field, A Farm to Table Cookbook, where he shares his philosophy, and many seasonal recipes (yes, I already have a copy). Check out his website, and you will also find amazing artwork that is created right on the beach. Seeing that it is Cape Cod, Jim will be creating art on the 19th of August at Chapin Beach in Dennis. So stop and give him and the entire crew a big Slow Food Cape Cod welcome.

Hope to see you at the event, if you are interested in helping, send me a note. as we get closer to the date, I am sure we will need some extra hands to help.

Uniting Around Food To Save an Ailing Town

Farmer Collaboration - Pete Johnson - Vermont

We are all in the right place at the right time to support the growing local-food movement.  Read this article from the NY Times about a small town, Hardwick VT, that is heavily investing in local foods and farming in a cooperative fashion to boost their economy. “Uniting Around Food to Save an Ailing Town“, by Marian Burros, published October 7th.  Hat Tip to Barbara Burbank, a SFCC member, for sharing.

“Farmer In Chief” Article by Michael Pollan – NY Times Oct. 9th

Friday, October 10th, 2008

With the Presidental election upon us, I told my mom I was undecided, and that my vote was going to the candidate who would take action on our industrialized food system. Mom laughed, and said it was not even an issue on the platform. You know, (much to my surprise),  she was right …….. as most moms are. Then a letter by Michael Pollan, addressed to Mr. President Elect, appeared in the NY Times. The letter is called Farmer in Chief , “What the next president can and should do to remake the way we grow and eat our food”.   After reading the article, I am getting ready to write my own letter, to Michael Pollan – it will go something like this – “If you ever want to run for the office, you’ve got my vote”  Hat Tip to Mark Buensalido for sharing the article.

Fat jar tomato sauce

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

Heaven might just lie in a vat of simmering tomato sauce. Late yesterday afternoon, beneath shuddering clouds and the hazy clap of thunder, I watched the sky light up my heavy bottomed pot.

Thick, red fruit bubbled up in the flash, and the smell of rich red wine and frying fat rose up from the stove. Onion and salt, rosemary and thyme wafted into the rafters, and the storm began to quell.

By the time the rain had stopped, the sauce reached a slow, lilting simmer. The earth began to let go outside, sucking up the rain puddles and dew drops and breathing against the stark silence of the passing storm.

As the sounds of the yard began, slowly at first and then chirping and humming and swaying in earnest, again the sauce roared up. The pot burped and spat as red juice reduced to a thick, rich sauce.

Zucchini pancakes

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

It became clear things were desperate when I began staring at the three terribly large zucchinis on my kitchen counter as potential breakfast objects. We’d eaten tens of the squashes for lunch and dinner in stir-fries, salads, breads—even desserts.

But when the morning meal rolled around, there was no choice but to continue. The plants’ leaves may be yellowing, but they show no signs of stopping. So rather than revolt, I pulled out my trusted pile of cookbooks and started paging.

The problem was, no author was this desperate. They listed casseroles and gratins, minestrones and breads. Even amidst the many listings for chocolate chip zucchini cookies I could not find an answer. So I turned instead to a new plan. Rather than hunt for a breakfast recipe already involving zucchini, I would think first of what I wanted to eat, and then devise a way of adding the squash to it…
