Our 2nd Farm to Table!! CLASH

Sunday, August 22nd, 2010

Farm Produce

Join us for the 2nd Slow Food Cape Cod “Farm to Table” as part of CLASH – Cape Land and Sea Harvest. Spend an afternoon at Coonamessett Farm in Falmouth and enjoy a sampling of freshly shucked oysters, listen to live jazz music, take in a farm tour and sit down to an elegant five course community meal.

A little bit of a twist, we plan to feature recipes from the cookbook Edible, A Celebration of Local Foods, as our inspiration for the meal. Tracey Ryder and Carole Topalian, Cofounders of Edible Communities Publications and creators of the book will be joining us. Edible Ojai was their first publication, Edible Cape Cod the second, thanks to Doug and Dianne Langeland, who also started CLASH.

Farmer Ron Smolowitz, is one of the local heroes showcased in the book. “Coonamessett Days, Jamaican Nights”, elegantly written by Tom Dott, “What Ron Smolowitz has done with Coonamessett Farm is like what the Swiss Army did to a knife”. I agree, Farmer Ron and his wife Roxanna were  ahead of their time, in that they created a breathtaking space, complete with a dance floor, to host farm to table dinners, long before they became the rage. You just can’t get any stronger of a link to our food, our farmers, and our community.

December 19th – Film Series – Julie and Julia

Sunday, December 13th, 2009
Main Street Gourmet in Orleans,  has been showing a series of food films. Lets meet and  share a snack, sip on goodies before the film, as well as after, with discussion about the film and other newsworthy food issues.   Since I somehow did not make it to the theaters to watch my icon Julia Child, I thought this would be a fun way to take in the film and get together with other Slow Food members. Space is limited, BYOC (bring your own chair), and any goodies you would like to enjoy for the movie. There is no charge for this event – making it perfect for the holiday season…

Main Street Gourmet is an elegant and resourceful retail kitchen shop for the aspiring and weathered gourmet chefs alike. Slow Food Cape Cod has a decorated Gingerbread House on display, see if you can figure out which one it is, and cast your vote.

Movie: Amy Adams stars in this truth-inspired tale as Julie Powell, a disenchanted government secretary who decides to enliven her uneventful life by cooking all 524 recipes outlined in Julia Child’s culinary classic Mastering the Art of French Cooking.  Based on Powells’s book Julie & Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen, director Nora Ephron’s heartwarming dramedy also stars Meryl Streep as legendary chef Child.

Joel Salatin, to Speak at APCC

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

Joel Salatin,  America’s most influential farmer, is the guest speaker at the Association to Preserve Cape Cod’s 2009 Annual meeting! Tickets are free for members of the Association and $20.00 for non-members. Joel Salatin came on my radar when I read Michael Pollan’s book “Omnivore’s Dilemma”. In the book, Michael Pollan wanted to purchase meat products from the farm and have them shipped. He soon found out the only way to get  local food was to be in the area, since Joel did not ship product. This ended up with a trip to the farm, and a very engaging introduction to Joel’s farming methods. The book opened my eyes to farming and how important it is to know where/how our food is produced. I am SO, SO excited to hear him speak, he is the author of several books, the latest being “Everything I Want to Do is Illegal“.

Where: Tiden Performing Arts Center, Cape Cod Community College Route 132, Hyannis

When: Wednesday, October 7, 2009

Real Food In School Campaign – Join Us Labor Day Weekend for our “Eat – In”

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

Time For Lunch

Join Us for our National Day of Action to get real food in schools, Labor Day September 7th – and since this is Cape Cod, we are also including September 4th for those who may not want to travel Route 6 or 28 on Labor Day.

Here is the scoop – we are asking parents, teachers, students, and every responsible citizen to speak up and tell our National Leaders that a change can’t wait, it is time for REAL FOOD in schools. We have organized two “Eat In” Events on the Cape over Labor Day weekend. The idea is to band together to show our support of REAL FOOD in schools, so far 275 chapters across the USA are involved. This fall the The Child Nutrition Act hits the floor in Congress, it governs the National School Lunch Program. This law comes up for reauthorization only every 4 or 5 years, so now is our chance to ask for changes. We can raise the bar for 30 million children who eat a school lunch every day. Read our platform and support our effort since we all know we can do better (and we will have some fun while we are at it).

EVENT: Coonamessett Farm BBQ Buffet / Fiddle Music

When: Friday Night September 4th

Time: 5 till 8

Where: Coonamessett Farm Falmouth MA 277 Hatchville Road

What: Vegetarian Buffet and BBQ Pulled Pork Grill

Music: Fiddle and Folk Music by Amy and Jonathan Larkin

Cost: $18.95 per adult, $9.95 per child, under 5 free

RSVP: Directly to the Farm at 508-563-2560

Questions? – email me at slowfoodcapecod@gmail.com

Last year Slow Food members and friends gathered together to share a meal at the farm, and we all agreed the spot was spectacular, the kids had a ball and we loved seeing the alpaca and babydoll southdown sheep. Coonamessett also hosts a classroom/science building for The Cape Cod Montessori Middle School, we sent them an invitation to join us. And Falmouth resident, Chef Lisa Holmes, is planning to come and chat about her adventures as a children’s culinary instructor and co-author of three books on nutrition and cooking, including “Lunch Lessons”.

EVENT: Pot Luck Eat In

When: Monday Septermber 7th 3:00 to 5:00

Where: Lower Cape Location – to be finalized shortly

What: “Eat – In” bring your own picnic supper or just swing by to mingle

Cost: Free

RSVP: slowfoodcapecod@gmail.com (or just show up)

Let’s show our solidarity with all other Slow Food chapters across the USA on this day of action. Join us for an informal pot luck supper. We plan to hold the event at a school setting on the Lower Cape. Save the date and time and we will provide the location shortly. Gretel Norgeot, of Checkerberry Farm is going to join us and discuss the plans for plantings at Nauset High School in Eastham. Gretel runs the Orleans Farmers Market and has been a driving force in keeping farming alive and ticking here on the Cape. We can also discuss the idea of getting the green house operational, which in turn could offer so many opportunities for the students.

Chicken BBQ Sizzler – Join Us – July 31st

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

Jen Holloman (our resident cheese maker) and her husband Jay Beitz from Ocean Song Farm are raising French Label Rouge chickens, in support, we preordered 25 for a Community BBQ, (hosted by our members Beth and Kim Campbell and Tom Gainey). This will be a great house party for us to get together, support our local farmers and share in fabulous food.

Early spring I got a call from Jen Holloman, it was just an idea at the time, to raise Rouge Chickens on the shores of Cape Cod for Slow Food. One thing led to another, and the next I knew we were planning a BBQ. Location was next, and our members Beth and Kim Campbell, and Tom Gainey, offered to host at their home in Brewster. They have connections to a very large BBQ with rotisserie, I suggested a keg of Cape Cod Beer, next thing you know we have a community supper for July – a house party of sorts.

So here is the deal, we will BBQ the chicken, and tap a keg of Cape Cod Beer. We ask that members bring something local to share – a side dish/dessert/appetizer, along with a beverage of your choice. Cost is $25.00 per person, location is in Brewster – will provide directions. It should be a fun night for all of us to get together under the stars and talk local foods and get to know what Jen and Jay are doing at Ocean Song Farm. Event will be held rain or shine.

I am really curious about tasting Label French Rouge Chickens, since they are regarded as the best poultry in the world. The birds are traditionally raised, free ranging and are all about taste that is vividly distinguishable from industrial breeds. Jen and Jay have raised the chicken at Long Pasture Sanctuary, Cummaquid and they are protected in their little “chicken tractors”. This breed is a slow growing bird (81 days), raised in harmony with nature and fed an all grain diet.

Event: Community BBQ

When: Friday July 31st

Time: 6:00 PM

Where: Brewster MA (will send directions)

Cost: $25.00 per person

What to Bring: One Local Side Dish (appetizer, salad, dessert, cheese…. or what ever you would like to share) and your choice of beverage

RSVP: Mary at slo

Beef and Beer – Community Get Together – Saturday May 30th

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

Join us for our “Beef and Beer” celebration to kick off the summer season.

The subject matter is grass fed beef and the questions are: Where can you buy it on the Cape (?),  How does it taste (?), What is the big deal about it (?), and of course, the very important question, once it becomes a grilled juicy burger , what can you possibly pair it with (?)….

If these questions have been causing you to lose sleep, (or like me, to stop eating burgers) we have the answers. We are providing a taste and tour of all flavors of Cape Cod Beer and a smattering of sliders and Cape Cod Porter braised short ribs, from Northeast Family Farms.

Each hour we will be providing tours of the expanded digs at Cape Cod Beer (we are talking 5,000 square feet of space!). Todd Marcus, head brewmaster along with his wife Beth, have created an amazing business devoted to making local artisan beer. With a couple of gold medals from GIBC under their belt, for their Cape Cod Red (American Amber) and Dunkel Weizen (wheat beer) the tasting is sure to please.

We are also setting up a grill,  which will be tended to by Dole and Bailey’s Northeast Family Farms (NEFF).  This is our opportunity to  be educated about one of the finest meat products around New England. Dole and Bailey and NEFF has created a supply chain to connect the local farmer to the chef and markets that desire their products. All the cattle is grass-fed with a strict set of protocols to be raised slowly without the use of hormones and feed grade antibiotics. The result is an authentic, artisan food.

Date: Saturday, May 30th
Location: Cape Cod Beer
                1336 Phinney’s Lane
                Hyannis, MA
                508-790-4200
Time: 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM  (tours every hour)
Cost: $13.00 adult and $8.00 per child
(Alternative refreshments will also be available)
RSVP: Mary at slowfoodcapecod@gmail.com

Every hour on the hour, a representative will offer a tour of Cape Cod Beer and representatives from Northeast Family Farms be on hand to answer all product information.

Stop by for 10 minutes for tasters and nibbles or come and BBQ with us for the afternoon.  We look forward to kicking off the season with Cape Cod Beer and learning more about NEFF.
